Having a Play on a Rainy Day.

Here we are on the last day of 2011…Rain, rain, rain.

I have been enjoying a few books and magazines.

One of my friends has loaned me a copy of her book by Sarah Ban Breathnach…"Something More…Excavating Your Authentic Self"

A quote that appeals is

There are no little things.  "Little Things" are the hinges of the Universe.  Fanny Fern

Another friend has loaned me "The Modern Quilting Bee Block Party" by Alissa Haight Carlton and Kristen Lejnieks.

One of my favorite quilts in this book is "Party of Twelve" , designed, assembled and quilted by Megan Risse.  I love the look of the Confetti blocks that she show us how to create.

So the combination of the two books and a small stash of bright Liberty of London pieces has inspired my to have a play on this rainy day..and see what happens.

Selected pieces of Liberty of London cotton.

Wonky cutting is fun and liberating!

I am wondering whether or not to leave this as it is…as a wall hanging, or to create more blocks and create a quilt.

I will need to gaze at it a while longer.  Less is more comes to mind.

Let me know what you think?

I did feel the need to have some completion and came up with this little gem.

One tiny piece of this cute nautical design just seemed to be asking for a small frame.:)

It is happily pinned in the hallway.

Wishing you all a great, inspiring, healing 2012 as we all excavate our authentic selves with the gift of creativity.

Holiday Mode

Yesterday I had a great clean up of my sewing are, tidied my fabrics, and made new space for future projects .

Such a great feeling!

I even feel it’s tidy enough to share a pic.

Also, I am happy to share my fun pin holders.  I have a lot of fun using these…and have two on the go for my sewing activities.

I have one heart and one Very Helpful Bear.

I have listed the first one of these in my ETSY STORE.

 and..

Keeping track of those pins is so easy with the Helping Bear Pin Holder.

This is the Lavish Pin it pin holder.  It is originally made with bobby pins in mind, but I have been happily using mine for my sewing pins.
This would also make a great Bear Template for applique or stuffed toy design.
A Muti-tasking Blue Bear!

Size 9 1/2 cm tall, 7.3 cm wide at widest point.
It is made of plastic and has magnets inside to attract and hold the pins.

This product has been designed by New Zealand’s Young Entrepreneurs…one of whom happens to be the son of my girlfriend.
On the packet it states "We (Lavish) are the Business People of Our Future, therefore we would appreciate your support through the purchase of our product.

Also, tomorrow I plan to take my Bernina sewing machine to the store to get the free motion quilting part "tuned up" .  I would like to get some practice in a get a bit more adventurous in my quilting activities.

We are having a gorgeous dose of summer weather here, so I’m off out into it!

PS.  I was a bit naughty yesterday and bought some fabric at Stitches N’ Giggles.…Lori has a great sale on until the end of 2011…just a few days to go.

I chose a Fat Quarter bundle of "Amelia" by Me & My Sister…..looking forward to the mail 🙂

Mystery Quilt: Month 4! or Where Do The Months Go?

Month 4 of the Mystery Quilt "That Square Quilt" has raced up.

Both parts of the TWO Mystery Quilts that I am doing concurrently are done now.

If you are a new viewer, this Mystery Quilt has been designed by The Gourmet Quilter.

The first one, as follows, is made up with gorgeous and girly "Amelia" range, by Moda, designed by Me & My Sister.

This fabric was kindly donated by Lori at Stitches N’ Giggles.

Please visit her site for great daily specials, great service and of course great fabric.

Here are the first pieces all cut out and ready to go.

…and half-square triangles coming along nicely.

Half square triangles…instructions are very clear on the pattern…here are a couple about to appear…

Trimming those new squares…not my favourite job, but those neat squares will pay off later I am sure.

Now a trap for young players is to make sure the two fabrics are in their correct positions on the pinwheel.  This is something I did not know to take in to account.  So the sewing editor in my Tuesday sewing group asked me  "Have you got your pinwheels going the right way?"

What do you mean?  I replied.

WELL, to cut a long story short, I have got mine the wrong way around.  I am never quick to rush in to unpicking, so they will stay this way until it may or may not become clear, as I put the pieces together at the end, that I need to redo them!

I have bravely continued with the second fabric selection…This quilt I have named The Gypsy Quilt.

My fabrics are close together in color so these half square triangles are subtle in contrast.

I love it that my Bear helps me!

Pinwheels nearly done…This time with close attention to the fabric order!  I think I have it right.

Here it is all done for this month!  Well for a square quilt..there were plenty of triangles to catch a triangularly-challenged beginner like myself unawares.  Still, nothing that a cup of tea and a piece of pre-Christmas cake won’t help 🙂  I’m off to put the kettle on….

First Handmade Tote Bag.

A couple of weeks ago, with much appreciated help from The Gourmet Quilter,

I completed my first simple tote bag…Handmade!

I have gathered fabric over the years and stashed it away with the thought.."That would make a great bag!".

Now the time has come…and the first one has arrived.

It was spurred on by a visit to Nancy’s Embroidery.  When I walked in the door there was a bright tote bag with lots of Kaffe Fasset ribbon appliqued on to it.  The deal was, purchase some ribbon and get a free pattern to make the bag.  As the ribbon was just a teensy bit pricey, I purchased just one yard.  The ribbon is gorgeous.

Take a look at how it turned out…

The inner fabric I think is gorgeous too…it is "Buttercup" by Joanna Figuero, Fig Tree & Co. for Moda fabrics.  It is soft and delicious!

The flower is made from Liberty of London cotton, with a vintage button in the center.

All in all I so enjoyed the process that I have just yesterday made another, smaller version which I will show soon.

Thanks for stopping by

Salsy.
