First Commissioned Quilt!

The Opportunity to Create My First Commissioned Quilt came just as I was completing the Picnic Quilt.  I was having a coffee with a new friend and had been talking about how I was so enjoying the vibrant colours I was working with.  As we parted he said  “send me some photos of your quilt….”.  Soon after when I had done just that, the email arrived…”I LOVE it…Please could you make one for my daughter?  “

Well, I was a mixture of excited and daunted.  The brief for his 6 year old daughter was ..’very girly, bright colours, pinks and she loves angels and fairies…’

I loved the process of exploring the fabric shops for ideas and fabric.  It did not take long before I was away…

Where to start?

for the 'Abundance" picnic quiltAs with any creative quilt the question is…Where to start?

In the last week before last Christmas…I arrived home from a trip up north.  My lovely partner is always pleased to see me, but he made sure I was organised quickly with a cup of tea and a position by the phone.  Well, it went!  A lovely voice on the line said, after a brief introduction…”Do you remember buying a raffle ticket a while ago for a new sewing machine?  Well, you’ve won!”  The tickets were in support of the Remarkables Quilting Symposium in the South Island of New Zealand in early 2011.

I did remember indeed.  I had looked down at that book of tickets and thought..’Wow it would be great to win that’…a brand new Bernina 440 Quilter’s Edition.

I was so excited..it was like a doorway had opened for me in to new adventures and opportunity.  I wasn’t brand new to sewing…my Bernina Special was continuing to serve me well after 22 years.  …But I had never made a quilt.

“Abundance” First Quilt

My First Quilt…a Picnic Quilt….”Abundance”.

Last summer I enjoyed a beginner’s quilting class in my local area.  When I started I had no idea what the blocks would become as they emerged.  Soon I recognized that a picnic quilt was developing. This was my first house block.  I was so pleased with it I made another!
